Senior Advisor: Planning

Reports to: Councillor and Chief of Staff

Salary Range: $60,000 – $70,000 per year

Position Type: Permanent (Aligned with Council Term)

Position Summary:

The Senior Advisor: Planning provides strategic advice on urban planning, land use, and development matters to support the Councillor’s priorities for the Ward. This role focuses on analyzing development proposals, reviewing planning policies, and supporting decision-making related to zoning, housing, and urban development.

Key Responsibilities:

Planning & Policy Analysis

• Review and analyze planning applications, development proposals, rezoning requests, and official plan amendments.

• Provide policy advice on land use, housing, zoning, and urban development.

• Monitor trends in planning, housing, infrastructure, and transportation to inform policy direction.

Council & Legislative Support

• Assist in preparing motions, amendments, and policy proposals related to planning and development.

• Review City planning reports, staff recommendations, and zoning by-laws.

Stakeholder & Community Engagement

• Liaise with City staff, developers, and community stakeholders on planning matters.

• Represent the Councillor at planning meetings, consultations, and community discussions when required.

Research & Strategic Advice

• Conduct research on planning policies, housing strategies, and urban development best practices.

• Prepare briefing notes, reports, and presentations on planning-related issues.

• Assess potential impacts of development on housing, businesses, and community services.

Qualifications & Experience

• Post-secondary degree in urban planning, public policy, political science, geography, or a related field.

• Minimum 2 years of experience in urban planning, land use policy, government relations, or a related field.

• Strong knowledge of municipal planning processes, including development applications, zoning by-laws, and official plans.

• Experience reviewing planning reports and development proposals and providing policy analysis.

• Excellent research, writing, and briefing skills with the ability to communicate complex planning issues clearly.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

• Experience working in a municipal, provincial, or federal political office is considered an asset.

• Experience working with community stakeholders, government staff, or the development sector is an asset.
